Wine is the country’s fifth-largest export, which equates to 1.3 billion dollars. Over the past 20 years, New Zealand’s wine production has increased by over 20% percent annually. The country’s winemaking grapes grow in an assortment of different climates and soil conditions around New Zealand’s winemaking regions. The regions for optimal grape crops are Gisborne, Auckland, Central Otago, Wairarapa, Marlborough, Canterbury in the South Island, and Hawkes Bay in the North Island.

New Zealand’s modern winemaking industry began in the mid-20th century. Vineyards began in Auckland, New Zealand, towards the end of the nineteenth century. The wineries during that time mostly created table wines, sherries, and ports. West Auckland had a sizeable Croatian community, which had a substantial influence on New Zealand’s wine industry. Many of the well-known labels in the Auckland area today come from Croatian names.

The upcoming episode of “Behind The Scenes” will discuss more with industry professionals about the history and the impact the winemaking industry has on New Zealand’s overall economy.
